Bar Specials Part 2: Drink and Duff
It seems like the Burlington Bar Specials specials series has come at the perfect time for me and the rest of the drink review crew. We’re in the awkward phase of senior year, when we’re almost at the end, but not quite close enough to actually have a job or any sort of plan for the future. Our bar visits over the past few weeks have been a therapy/respite from this strange and frightening time.
It seems like ages ago, but it was only last week when we went to Drink to sample all (literally–all seven) of their Monday night specials. Since we were on break, there was a huge crowd of us–at least 16 from my count. it felt like my birthday being surrounded by all my friends who came out to help with my “research”.
Then this Tuesday, I went out Duff Hour at Three Needs with Hannah, Liz, and Andy. Tuesday was one of those bright and sunny first really nice days of spring, so there was nothing better we could have been doing than drinking a pint at 4:30 in the afternoon. Plus, we were enjoying Three Needs from it’s new location (where Parima used to be) which is spacious, yet surprisingly cozy. We agreed that everything about that afternoon–the wood floors, the relaxed atmosphere, the daytime drinking–brought us back to being in Dublin last spring.
135 St. Paul Street
Special: all specials
Best Part: board games and couches
Before coming to do research, I already knew that the only thing that could improve Drink is free refills (a lofty goal, I know.) We had a wonderful time sampling the variety of Drinks on the specials menu. Allyson tried the whiskey sour (good for those who want a not-too-sweet mixed drink,) Hannah got the classic cosmopolitan (very fruity,) Harry stuck to beers (he wanted everyone to know that they ran out of PBR and replaced it with Magic Hat. Good move,) and Lorelei got her old favorite, Long Island Iced Teas (best bang for your buck as far as alcohol,) among many other berverages we tried that night. We also made full use of the board games and noted that they would be a good remedy for awkwardness on a first date (that’s a tip, ladies and gents!)
185 Pearl Street
Special: Duff Hour ($1 pints from a keg, until it runs dry!)
Best Part: The new, lofty yet cozy location
Three Needs was about half full, fairly quiet, and cozy on Tuesday around 5. Liz and I got there at 4:45 (Duff starts at 4) and were able to buy two pints of Otter Creek before the keg ran out around 5:15. We spent a very relaxing hour and a half chatting and reminiscing about Ireland before we had to pack up and get back to real life matters. Early in the evening, Three Needs is a great bar to talk and hang out with friends without having to compete with a large crowd and loud music.
We only have two more bar visits left, so next Friday I’ll be posting the grand finale mega-guide to the best bar specials in Burlington. Thanks for the fun times everyone!
